With their unconventional designs and silhouettes, designer duo Asit Barik and Anvita Sharma have been carving a name for themselves in the industry. The desire to compartmentalise gender, setting the males and females separately across two sections is what their label Two Point Two focuses on

In a chat with Surupasree Sarmmah, Asit talks about his journey as a designer and his equation with his business partner Anvita.

How has been your journey as a designer?

Destiny played an important role in helping me become what I am today. I have been in the industry for some time now and I am quite blessed that in the initial days of my career, I got to work with artist Vivan Sundaram. Everything thereafter fell into place and there has been no looking back. I, today, look forward to each day as it comes. Every day has been a learning experience for me.

Was it always that you wanted to become a designer?

Not really. I wanted to be a dentist. But if I think now, I was consciously or unconsciously always trained to be in the creative field, throughout my childhood. So, if not a designer, I would have become a painter. I always had an eye for garments and jewellery.

How did your family react to your decision of becoming a designer?

Well, initially they were quite shocked (laughs). My father still doesnt understand what I do but with time I guess they will understand the fact that it is a good career option. The happiness that I get to see them watching my shows and applauding is the greatest feeling ever.

How did you and your business partner Anvita Sharma come together?

We met through a common friend at a fashion show and over the years, we have become really thick friends. Our design sensibility and ideologies match quite a lot a and one day the idea of starting something on our own popped up and surprising we both were for it. It was a sudden decision we took and by Gods grace, everything has been a smooth ride. Though it is a pretty new brand, we balance out each other in terms of work too.

Tell us about your label...

The label is called Two Point Two, which is an agender brand. We dont discriminate between male and female garments. We believe in owning up to your own body and we try to fit all body-types. We go by the rule of zero wastage, so most of our embroideries are done from waste. There is a lot of handworks that one can see in our designs. We mostly work on cotton-based fabric, keeping in mind weather and the geographical area we live in.

A designer you look up to...

Rajesh Pratap Singh, Abraham and Thakore, Yohji Yamamoto and Rick Owens.

Any advice for young designers...

Always follow your gut instincts.
