In the wake of increasing access to technology, many aspects of everyday life are undergoing changes.

Gifting is one such industry which has seen people move away from traditional options to 'experiential' ones like skydiving, kayaking, whitewater rafting, hang gliding, wine tasting, gourmet cooking lessons and more.

The trend is especially popular among youngsters who believe that gifting someone an experience is any day better than materialistic gifts which may not be that memorable.

Mohan Kumar N S recently surprised his wife with a three-day trip to Maldives. Not just that, he has also gifted a trip to his parents.

"I love to travel and that kind of inspires me to share that wonderful experience with others. This apart, good food at a fine dining restaurant is also a great gifting option for me because I love feeding people," he says.

Mohan is a firm non-believer of materialistic gifts.

"There are people who judge others with the kind of gifts they give. There are also times when you want to surprise someone with a gift but it fails terribly. For me, memories make the best gifts."

Talking about the process, he points out that there are many online portals that help one with such experiential presents. However, he also feels that with social media, every new trend is a rage till it is overtaken by another fad. "This trend too is here to stay for a while," he says.

Suraj Erasal also believes that while people tend to forget a tangible gift, enjoyable escapades will be remembered forever.

"This gifting trend is a great option, especially for one's birthday. It is a good way to make them
feel special. It was just last week that I surprised my girlfriend by arranging for an aeroplane-flying experience."

"She always wanted to become a pilot so I took her to Jakkur airport and surprised her with a
micro mini flight. She was trained for about 20 minutes after which she was allowed to fly it on her
own. She was stunned and overwhelmed with happiness," he says.

And interestingly, it is not just people who are being gifted a little 'me time' to help them feel special. Actor Karthik Sampath says, "I recently gifted my dog a spa and a salon treat on his birthday. My dog is an important part of my family and I have celebrated a few special occasions with her. I believe they understand when we show love."

Karthik also makes sure to take his dog for a massage and cook something special for her when they are together.

"Experiential gifts help one express how special the recipient is to them, whether human or animal."
