It was a lot more than the pleasant nature of the city that brought Upali Bhattacherjee and husband Abhishek Choudhury from Silchar, Assam, to Bengaluru.
While Abhishek has been here since 2010, Upali came to the city in 2014.
While Abhishek has been here since 2010, Upali came to the city in 2014.
Since then there has been no looking back for the duo. Abhishek works with United Technologies, and Upali with Ipsoft Global Services. The couple loves the perfect balance that their personal and professional lives have here.
It were the better opportunities that brought them here. Says Upali, "There was better scope for IT jobs. I also had a few friends studying here."
She recollects meeting Abhishek the day she arrived in Bengaluru and exchanging pleasantries and sharing their numbers. "I was on the same flight that his sister was on. But, nothing came out of it initially. Later on, we got acquainted, started meeting each other and before we knew it, we had let our parents know that we were interested in getting married," she says.
While love brought them together, pleasant experiences kept them here. Upali says, "One does not feel like an outsider. People here also speak Hindi well which made it easier for us to settle in," she details.
Upali remembers how helpful people were during her initial days in the city. Often while taking a bus ride, the conductor and the co-passengers would help her with the directions. "Even though I had to go alone for job interviews alone those days, I was never scared," she says.
For Abhishek, who graduated from Vellore, Bengaluru did not come as a surprise.
"I was familiar with the city and knew that this was where I wanted to work. Having friends from college here helped me a great deal."
He recollects, "The city gifted me with quite a few happy moments. From the day I arrived here till now, I am lucky to have met people who are always ready to help."
"Once I was in Malleswaram and couldn't find a bus to Bannerghatta Road. A man who was headed in that direction, dropped me till my doorstep. I can never forget such instances which reinforced my faith in people," he adds.
The couple also finds great joy in travelling.
"We love travelling. A drive to the airport is one of our favourite activities. We also try out the eateries on Hosur Road and head to Nandi Hills once in a while," says Abhishek.
"Either with Abhishek or with friends, I love being at 'TOIT' or 'Vapour Pub & Brewery'. I also like '1522 - The Pub', 'Gilly's Restobar' and 'Om Made cafe'," lists Upali.
Adjusting to South Indian food was a challenge for Upali but it is her staple diet now.
"I love 'poha', 'idli' and 'dosa' more now," she says while Abhishek is happy that this city has a variety of cuisines to offer.
"'Chianti' was a place we used to frequent," he says.
While malls top the list of their shopping destinations, Upali also loves the buzzing local markets
like Chickpet and Commercial Street.
"One can find everything on one street in such places," she says.
The young couple also observe that among other things, Bengaluru has boosted their confidence.
"We are independent as individuals now. Upali and I have also learnt to co-exist with different
people and appreciate different cultures. Our networking skills too have improved," says Abhishek.
"Bengaluru is a perfect balance of tradition and modernity. Moreover, it is a bag of surprises," adds Upali.
