Bollywood is the biggest trendsetter when it comes to the fashion industry in India. More often than not, our style inspirations are our glamorous celebrities and our lookbooks are the latest glitzy movies that are churned out of the Hindi film stable on a regular basis.

One movie that gave us major friendship and fashion goals was 'Jab We Met' in which Kareena Kapoor Khan dazzled the audience with her attitude and easy-going wardrobe, which included a very quirky combination of 'patiala' bottoms and T-shirts that took the fashion world by storm.

Not that they needed any particular boost in popularity but 'patiala' bottoms, alongwith their counterparts like harem pants, 'dhoti' pants and palazzos, had almost always been associated with a certain look and a feeling that these garments do not lend themselves to experimenting. Until recently.

Designers these days are going for a no holds barred approach when it comes to mixing and matching the different versions of these loose bottoms for combinations that range from downright ethnic to the snazzily western.

Says Vishakha Singh, founder and CEO of 'Red Polka', "We are seeing different styles of 'patiala' bottoms, like the 'dhoti pants', becoming hot favourites these days. Such pants are being worn with crop tops in addition to traditional 'kurtis'. We have also seen some confident fashionistas pair up these patiala pants with western tops and jackets and these
make for a visual treat."

In the elegantly traditional jacket-patiala salwar, the embellished jacket is nicely structured to
complement the pleated bottom style.

You can also team up dhoti pants or 'patialas' with short embroidered kurtas, figure-hugging plain shirts or even Nehru jackets to stand out in a crowd.

One look at the appearances of Alia Bhatt in 'Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania' and Kangana Ranaut in 'Tanu Weds Manu 2' and you will understand why one goes gaga
over these fusion styles. And how can we ever forget Sonam Kapoor in her quirky dhoti ensemble in the movie 'Khoobsurat'?

Mamtaa Gupta, founder and owner of 'Buzzaria Dukaan' says, "With a patiala bottom,we can wear a short fitted kurti with a collar, an A-line kurti, halter style neckline, a fitted kurta with or without sleeves, kurtas ending above the knees with side slits and so on."

"Harem pants can be teamed with a box top or a straight kurta, long kurtas with long slits, knee-length kurtas with round bottoms and full sleeves and cuffs or sleeveless kurtas with a circular hem. With Dhoti pants, we can wear all of these and many more," she adds.

Says Dipika Thawani ,designer and founder of 'D'fuzion', "The traditional Punjabi patiala salwar has now been improvised to patiala pants or dhoti pants for the fashion conscious modern woman. These are extremely comfortable and can be teamed with crop tops, waist length peplum tops, racer backs, tube tops and even short kurtis. The attire can be further accessorised with a funky studded belt and a chunky neck piece to keep it casual or can be teamed with a short indo-western jacket with embellishments to create a semi-formal and a super stylish, yet comfortable ensemble."

Vouching for the popularity of this contemporary spin-off of the classic Indian attire, Diana Joseph, a student at Mount Carmel College, says, "I love these pants because they are very comfortable and easy to wear. Once can pair these with Indo-Western or ethnic tops and you are all set for any event or casual outing."

So ladies, ditch those skintight jeans for some time and notch up your glam quotient by staying comfortably casual.
