Playback singer and rapper Pinky Maidasani rose to popularity with songs like 'Kikli Kalerdi' from 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana' and 'Machali Jal Ki Rani Hai' and 'Dekh Le Kismat Yaar' from 'Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene'.
Besides featuring in reality shows, Pinky has also worked as the official singer for IPL team 'Chennai Super Kings' and can sing in as many as 13 different languages.
The singer, who recently released her new single 'Tera Rang', chats with Anushree Agarwal about her journey so far.
Your journey as a Bollywood singer.
There is always a big queue here and music directors don't entertain you easily. I rap in different languages, so when I started contacting them as a rapper and folk singer, I started getting work. The journey has been fantastic but I still have a long way to go.
The different languages you sing in...
Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Sindhi, Punjabi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Haryanvi, Marwari, Hindi, English, Himachali and Kashmiri. Delivering a song in the regional language helps me connect with the audience at different shows.
Tell us about your new single 'Tera Rang'.
It's a Sufi song and a love song too. It can be played in a temple, during wedding 'pheras' or even when you're with your lover.
It has been shot in Bhuj and Kutch and is doing quite well.
A song you had fun working on.
'Kikli Kalerdi' from 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana'. I had a great experience with music director Amit Trivedi and Honey Singh on the mike.
It was also a turning point for me as people started recognising me.
Your favourite Monsoon melodies.
'Tip Tip Barsa Pani' and 'Barso Re Megha Megha'.
One of your favourite singers.
It's Whitney Houston. I simply love her as a diva!
How do you take care of your voice?
I avoid sour and cold foods and do 'riyaaz' daily. I also practise yoga and 'praanayaam' everyday as that helps with breathing, which is very important for a singer.
Quick-fixes for a bad throat...
I chew four whole black peppers and have water. It's an amazing remedy. The other two are having ginger extract mixed with honey and gargling.
What is your survival mantra in this competitive industry?
I never compare myself with others as everyone has their own journey and talent. I only believe in myself and see what I can do best. If I like someone's work, I appreciate it and share it with others.
Your idea of leisure...
I love going shopping in Bangkok every couple of months. I also enjoy club-hopping there. It helps me explore the different genres of music played at the clubs.
