Actors, directors and musicians in the Kannada film industry have been trying out different combinations and permutations, to come up with something unique. And this uniqueness becomes the selling point of the project. It could be a song which is shot at an exotic location or directors roping in prominent actors to shake a leg in the film. There are endless experiments in the Kannada film industry and all these experiments seem to be moving in the right direction.

The latest to join this category of experimental filmmakers, is choreographer-turned director Imran Sardhariya. His directorial debut venture 'Uppu Huli Khara' has not only been shot in very exotic locations but the promotional song of the film seems to have grabbed a lot of attention. Imran is introducing a 360 degree Virtual Reality camera to Kannada industry through his film.

"The idea of making such a video was to enable people to access the song on their phones and other gadgets. The idea is to integrate technology with filmmaking. We have made a song where we have the whole cast of the film, including actor Malashri, crooning. The song talks about black money and also shows the people in the video throwing Rs 1000, depicting that there's really no value for that denomination note anymore," explains Imran.

The promotional clip has already become popular among film buffs. "This is our way of getting more people to notice the film. There's also a lot of competition involved in marketing a film and here we have attempted something very different and it seems to have worked well for us," explains Imran. He also says that he has got the cast to do some very quirky stuff in the film. "The idea is to give the very ordinary things a different twist and this is exactly what we have done in the song. We have exploited the benefits of technology to the hilt," he adds.

Another film that will soon hit the theatres is 'Pushpaka Vimana', directed by S Ravindranath. It has actors Ramesh Aravind and Rachita Ram donning very different roles. The makers have also roped in Bollywood actor Juhi Chawla for a special song in the film. She has been given a totally different look in the film and is seen wielding a guitar in few of the scenes in the film.

Sharing her experience of being a part of the project, Juhi Chawla, who will be returning to the industry after almost a decade, says "I play a movie star who is invited to attend a function organised in the jail for the inmates and I am expected to perform during the function. The lyrics are a mix of Hindi and Kannada which is good because a lot of people will relate to it," she explains. Juhi says that she has been getting offers from the Kannada film industry but couldn't accept any because of date issues.

"I was particular that my return to Kannada films must be for a very different kind of project and that's exactly what I've found in 'Pushpaka Vimana,'" she says. She also found that the song, in which she appears, has gone viral even before the release of the movie. Another song that did its bit in marketing the movie was from 'John Jani Janardhan'. The song had actors Yogi, Ajai Rao, Krishna and Aindrita Ray groove to a song.

Director Guru Deshpande says "The song talks about love and how women easily walk away from love and don't feel as hurt as men do. We wanted to shoot a trendy song shot around a popular subject that everybody can relate to and love seems to be everybody's favourite pick." Guru Deshpande explains that the song went viral even before the release of the film and did well to increase its visibility and get more people to walk into the theatres.
