It is definitely starting to look a lot like Christmas as many people have started shopping for Christmas decorations or unboxing the ones from last year.
While many might not have the time to celebrate Christmas exactly the way they want to, others are taking the effort to personalise this holiday with do-it-yourself decorations. From upcycling materials at home to many other quirky ways, enthusiastic persons are going all out with their plans.
It is the first time Archa Mary Chacko is making her own Christmas decorations. She says, "I started a Facebook page called 'The Yellow Kettle' when my son was born, where I am telling people how to make their own decorations. I feel this is a fun way to celebrate this season. I'm using old clothes and leftover cushion cover materials to make Santa boots, reindeer, stars and more."
Archa's reason for using fabric decor is that it can be reused and washed whenever needed. "My decorations are such a hit amongst my friends and family that I have started taking orders now. I wanted to implement a 'blue and silver' colour scheme for the season but reds and greens are still preferred by many. So my decorations at home are blue while the people who bought from me have stuck to the traditional colours," she laughs.
Marrying tradition with her love for art is Madhuri Tarimane Pillay. She says, "I was always fond of art and craft. I would collect wedding cards and make my own greeting cards while growing up. This year, I am making pearl snowflakes, angels for the tree and a wreath with silver mesh and green leaves."
As she wants to make her own version of the Christmas tree this year, she explains, "Since my husband is a photographer, I am personalising the tree by using the tripod and plants we have."
Revamping the Christmas tree is also Varsha CV, a communication officer, who is using books to make the tree. She says, "I usually do something different every year for the holidays. Last year I made wine; which turned out to be a horrible idea. Since books are a big part of my life, this year Idecided to use them to create my customised Christmas tree. Twirl some lights around it and place red and green decorations balls —we are ready for the holiday season!"
For Alicia Souza, an illustrator, Christmas is the holiday when she feels the happiest. Apart from making over 150 handmade cards for her friends and family, she also adds that extra touch by enclosing handmade hangings in the envelope. This year, a cute reindeer was the choice of tree hanging. She says, "This time of the year is the best because it brings back so many memories and instantly puts everyone in a good mood. I can have as many sweets as I want without feeling guilty! And the house is always colourful and beautiful. I'm putting together a wooden crib this weekend that is going to have graphics and maybe some abstract designs. It'll include the house and characters designed in blocks."
With colourful handmade decorations, lots of memories and tonnes of fun, Bengalureans sure are ready to deck the halls with boughs of holly.
