Those who have watched 'Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu' will remember the young actor Ravikiran Rajendran, who played 'Manja'.Despite being his first movie, the artiste's acting skills has caught people's attention. In a chat with TiniSara Anien, this fresh face in the industry talks about how his role in 'Godhi...' brought him other projects.

How did movies happen?

The assistant directors of 'Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu' studied with me in college. They suggested that I should try for the role. I did after a discussion with director Hemanth M Rao, he was convinced about me, and voila, the project happened!

How does it feel to act in movies?

Coming from a theatre background, I was always sceptical about the movie industry and the whole atmosphere. The film industry was always intimidating for me. I acted with Vasishta N Simha in the project and it was a great blessing. My meeting with Hemanth and the actor eased out a lot of things. Even during the shoot, the actor would make me feel relaxed. I was worried about doing retakes, especially with the likes of Anant Nag, Achyuth Kumar and Rakshit Shetty around. I was nervous, but things went well.

Difficulties on the sets...

The director told me about the character and how Manja (my character) thinks and I tried to visualise the role. It took some time to understand but I'm glad I took the role up. I've heard about a lot of theatre artistes who have done movies and the issues they faced trying to respond to the camera. Thankfully, I never had this issue. Remembering the continuity of the scenes and actions was challenging for me though.

How important was the role to you?

Manja, an accomplice of the anti-hero, is a role that one couldn't do without in 'Godhi...'. Though he comes and goes, his role changes the course of the movie. I loved the role and I got interesting feedback for the same. After seeing my performance in the movie, director Madan Ramvenkatesh called to offer me a role in 'The Last Kannadiga'.

Tell us a bit about 'The Last Kannadiga'.

'The Last Kannadiga' will see Vasishta, Sruthi Hariharan and me. It is a social experiment. Though it is a short film, it has been dealt with very seriously.

Your next feature film...

It was at my workplace that I met Ajay Benjamin and Samarth Narasimha Raju and we discussed 'Zes'. I was initially roped in to do an acting workshop as the casting director, but I will be seen playing one of the main roles in the movie.

A bit about your role.

The role is different from the one I played in 'Godhi...' or 'The Last Kannadiga'. I will be playing a robber, who is also a drunkard. I play one of the six core characters and the project revolves around how our lives change. My character can't handle being sober. The movie is an action-thriller and the role is of a different league. The shooting will start in January and will be shot in Bengaluru and Puducherry.

What are the kind of movies you want to do?

I want to do roles thatI will be remembered as a performer for. The genre doesn't matter to me. I am a huge admirer of actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui. He has done movies where he has just come and gone, yet he has been remembered.
