They make products that are fun and quirky yet aesthetic and beautiful in their own way. The items come in bold colours but still hold a rustic charm. Anushri and Akshay, co-founders of 'Mug and Mooch', create interesting handcrafted stationery that, they feel, will inspire people to write more and express themselves without getting bored.

The 'mooch' represents royal pride that they have in their crafts while the 'mug' represents the reinvigorating freshness of inspiring design. "We wanted to create products that bring a fresh and modern design perspective to the rich traditional crafts. Hence, we came up with this name. The thing is that both of us like to write. In fact, I have been collecting notebooks all my life. However, we found that most of the diaries available in the market are really mundane and they don't inspire you to write. Even handmade products come in such dull repetitive styles that people just buy these notebooks and keep them in some corner. So we wanted to create something new that inspires one to write. The notebooks had to be innovative with bright colours and that's when we thought of making cheerful handmade notebooks," says Anushri, a corporate lawyer turned designer.

The couple also felt that the venture would be a great way to blend their respective passions and talents. "Anushri did her post- graduation from Indian Institute of Crafts and Design (IICD). She loved making handmade stuff since childhood and has explored various craft techniques with different medium. I am an IITian and a storyteller who has funny stories to narrate about everything in life. I like to spin a character into the most inanimate of things. 'Mug and Mooch' was the perfect way to bring our skills together," says Akshay.

The duo started their venture almost a year back and also launched an e-store a few months back. The notebooks come in different sizes and also have stories attached to them. There are 'dog series pocketbooks' with geometrical dog motifs, which one can put in their pocket and write on the go; 'sequin notebooks' in different motifs and colours which serve as a personal diary or a travel companion and 'thought books' to pen one's thoughts and ideas and they come in different variations including 'Chirpy like a Bird!', 'Moody like a Cat!' and 'Elephants Never Forget!'

"We also have a range of other fascinating products like 'artist sketchbooks' for sketching and doodling that come with tracing sheets, 'trailblazers' (folded triangle magical notebooks) for jotting your memories while you are on an outdoor adventure, wall decor frames and greeting card sets," details Anushri.

She highlights that for the production of their merchandise, they have trained the enterprising ladies of Koramangala Village who are now making all the products.

"Each of our products is skillfully handcrafted and comes with different stories. We have been participating in exhibitions and have partnered with online and physical platforms. We hope to inspire the love for crafts and writing once again," says the duo.
