Each city has it's own dynamics with respect to fashion and character. When one thinks of Bengaluru, 'pret-a-porter tops the list. Popularly known as the city of ready fashion wear, Bengaluru's youngsters feel that lifestyle brands are an intrinsic part of their wardrobe, using which they make varied style statements.

Branded wear gives one the assurance that it is long lasting and also helps make bold style statements, says youngster Jaydeep Kant, an IT professional. It helps him "carry off a mature and classy look, even while sporting casual wear". "They might not be easy on the pocket, but this is exactly why they bring in a suave touch to one's wardrobe. Branded clothing has a certain panache to it, like none other," he says.

Today's fashion is about expressing oneself in the best possible way. Navchetan Rai, a calisthenics trainer, says most branded clothing lines have stories to tell through their latest collections, which make them important. "Clothing is about expression. Many international brands are seeping into the Bengaluru market, which explains the high demand for such fashion. Such clothes wouldn't be available at local markets," he says.

Brands have helped create an identity that people would like to adopt. "One doesn't need to go out of one's way to express oneself with branded wear. Also, the great part about shopping at a branded clothing store is they are a one-stop solution for fashion needs — from caps to clothes to shoes," says Navchetan.

Aparana Raturi, a student of Oxford College of Law, says that branded clothes last longer as they are superior in quality. "But it is impossible for students to be 'brand freaks' as youngsters cannot always afford the big brands." She likes shopping at flea markets and believes that such spaces work well for both buyers and sellers. A lot of options are available at more affordable prices at such stops. Shops for branded wear comes with a certain sense of guilt as one spends a lot on a single piece of clothing." Aparana believes that branded clothing has its own space as it's perfect for any occasion.

While the city is being flooded with new brands every day, Seema Kris Gowda, a model-cum-actress, says that of late, street fashion has picked up among the younger crowd. "Nowadays, it's mostly people in the corporate industry who are particular about buying for branded wear only. While they last longer, the local markets and shops have more variety," she says.

Seema adds that when a certain trend sets in, it is easier to rush off to a local fashion market like Commercial Street to shop as it has a lot to offer.

Fashion is as much about 'pret-a-porter as it is about wearing stylish yet comfortable outfits. Sonal Prabhu, a second-year PUstudent at Mount Carmel College, is brand-conscious though she feels that fashion is personal. "Alot of people overdo sporting branded wear. I don't go by the current trends. Instead, I pick up what I like from across brands. The good part about the many malls in the city is that they house a variety of quality brands from Chanel to Forever21," says Sonal.

Any brand or shop that is able to express fashion in an out-of-the-box manner is the fashion solution for her. "I indulge in branded clothing, but I match them with other items to bring out my own style."

She points out that branded wear provides a range of sizes, but compromises on exclusivity. "Smaller shops or boutiques offer clothes that make a unique style statement," Sonal adds.
